Sept 22, 1963: C.O.R.E. March

August 24th, 2018

On September 22, 1963, the Congress of Racial Equality held a march in honor of four young African-American girls in Birmingham, Alabama, who had been killed when their church was bombed the previous Sunday. I recall a slow, somber walk, two abreast, winding through the sidewalks of Mount Vernon and up the hill on Charles Street, on the west side of Peabody toward the monument. My most vivid memory is of a classmate, who as we walked was holding the hand of a minister at the head of the march. Many people were in tears, including this classmate.
